Win bigger clients & tenders
More contracts and supplier panels now ask how you protect data. An SMB1001 certificate is a simple, recognised way to answer the security questions instead of stalling on the deal.
SMB1001 is the Australian cyber security standard built for small and medium business. Unity Systems gets you certified at Silver or Gold, so you can show clients, insurers and partners that your data is genuinely protected. And we're Gold certified ourselves.
Your cyber security, measured against the SMB1001 standard and kept up to date all year.
SMB1001 is a recognised Australian cyber security standard made specifically for small and medium businesses. Instead of one all-or-nothing pass, it grades your security across five levels, so you can start where you are and step up over time.
It looks at five practical areas of your business: the technology you run, who can access it, how you back up and recover your data, the policies behind it all, and how your team is trained. Get the controls in place, and you earn a certificate you can actually show people.
Published by Dynamic Standards International (DSI) and certified through CyberCert. It's updated every year. The current edition is SMB1001:2026. It's designed to complement the ACSC Essential Eight and act as a practical stepping stone toward ISO 27001.
Every level is built from controls across the same five areas, so your protection improves evenly, not in one corner.
Cybercrime against Australian small business keeps climbing. A certificate turns "we take security seriously" from a claim into something you can actually show.

When an insurer or customer asks what controls you have in place, you'll have documented proof (multi-factor authentication, backups, training and more) rather than a best guess.
Certification isn't paperwork for its own sake. Getting the controls genuinely in place is what stops the breach. The certificate just lets the rest of the world see it.
SMB1001 runs from Bronze to Diamond, each level adding more protection on top of the last. For most small and medium businesses, Silver or Gold is the sweet spot, so that's all we do.
Entry-level basics: firewalls, antivirus, updates and backups. A start, but bare minimum for most businesses.
We start clients higherConsistent everyday protection: multi-factor authentication on email, a password manager, individual user accounts, secured email and the core policies in place.
Great baseline for small teamsProactive defence: active threat detection (EDR) on every device, MFA everywhere, enforced email security, a written security policy, incident response plan, asset register and staff training.
Our recommendation for mostIndependently audited, with vulnerability scanning and encryption at rest. Built for larger or regulated organisations.
Audited tierIndependently audited, with penetration testing and incident-response drills. Enterprise-grade assurance.
Audited tierSilver and Gold are certified on a director's signed attestation that the controls are in place; the higher Platinum and Diamond levels add an independent third-party audit. Either way, what protects you is genuinely having the controls, which is the part we handle.
Plenty of IT companies will sell you a certificate. Here's what makes getting certified with us different.
We hold SMB1001 Gold certification in our own business. We're not asking you to do anything we haven't already done.
We don't push pointless Bronze or oversell audit-heavy tiers you don't need. We deliver the two levels that genuinely fit growing businesses, and we do them well.
The certificate is the easy part. We keep the controls running all year, so you're still protected, and still certified, at renewal, not just on day one.
Your private Unity portal shows your SMB1001 status any time: what's protected, what's left, and who's on each fix. Meet Kevin →
We do the heavy lifting. You get the certificate, the protection, and your time back.
We measure your business against the SMB1001 controls and show you exactly where you stand, and whether Silver or Gold is the right fit.
Our team puts the missing controls in place (MFA, threat detection, backups, policies and training) and gathers the evidence as we go.
We take you through certification to Silver or Gold and hand you a certificate you can show clients, insurers and partners with confidence.
We keep the controls running and renew you each year. Check your status live any time with Kevin. No surprises at renewal.
The straight version, including the bits other providers gloss over.
It's an Australian cyber security standard made for small and medium businesses. Rather than one pass-or-fail, it grades your security across five levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond) and five practical areas: technology, access, backup & recovery, policies, and training. It's published by Dynamic Standards International (DSI), certified through CyberCert, and updated every year (the current edition is SMB1001:2026).
There are five, and each one includes everything in the level below it: Bronze (Level 1), Silver (Level 2), Gold (Level 3), Platinum (Level 4) and Diamond (Level 5). Bronze, Silver and Gold are certified on a signed director's attestation. Platinum and Diamond add an independent external audit. For most small and medium businesses, Silver or Gold is the right target.
Bronze is Level 1, the entry point. It covers the basic protections every business should already have, and it's a fair first step if you're starting from nothing. We don't deliver Bronze on its own, because Silver includes everything in Bronze and adds consistent everyday protection, like multi-factor authentication on email and a password manager. If you're going to do the work, Silver is usually the better first target.
No. SMB1001 is voluntary and industry-recognised; it isn't legislated or formally mandated by government. But clients, insurers and tenders increasingly want to see that you follow a recognised framework, and SMB1001 is a practical, affordable way for a smaller business to show exactly that.
Silver is consistent everyday protection: multi-factor authentication on email, a password manager, individual user accounts, secured email and core policies. Gold builds on that with proactive defence: active threat detection (EDR) on all devices, MFA across all key apps and remote access, enforced email security (DKIM & DMARC), a written cyber security policy, a formal incident response plan, a digital asset register, staff training and a responsible-AI-use policy.
Bronze is bare-minimum basics, and the top tiers (Platinum and Diamond) add independent audits aimed at larger or regulated organisations. For most small and medium businesses, Silver or Gold is the right balance of real protection and cost, so those are the two levels we focus on and deliver properly.
You don't need an auditor for Bronze, Silver or Gold. They're certified on a signed director's attestation that the required controls are in place. Independent third-party audits apply at the higher Platinum and Diamond levels. What actually protects your business is genuinely having those controls in place and keeping them current, which is exactly what we put in place and manage for you all year.
SMB1001 is complementary to the ACSC Essential Eight. It wraps similar technical controls in policies, oversight, training and incident response, and lets you build up tier by tier. It's also a practical stepping stone toward ISO 27001. It isn't equivalent to, or a replacement for, either. Think of it as the right-sized starting point for a growing business.
An SMB1001 certification is valid for 12 months and is renewed each year against the current edition of the standard. We keep your controls in place throughout the year, so staying certified is just business as usual rather than a yearly scramble.
There are two costs. The first is the annual certification fee paid to CyberCert, which depends on the level. CyberCert publishes its current fees. The second is the work of getting the required protections in place and keeping them there, and that depends on where you're starting from. A business with good basics already has less to do. That's why we start with a free Security Scorecard: you see the gaps and the plan before you commit to anything.
